BEDFORD ALUMNI: Courtney.

What a fantastic experience one of our past Bedford students has had travelling to Africa with her College.

Courtneys story....
I arrived in Arusha, Tanzania two weeks ago, and what an unforgettable, emotional journey it has been so far. I’ve spent my time volunteering across the community: we’ve helped decorate and build a new safe space for children in need of protection, and supported learning at the most joyful SEND centre, where the children’s spirit is truly inspiring. I’ve also seen first-hand how differently people learn here compared to the UK—from the orphanage where I’ve helped children build new skills, to the women’s centre, where we’ve joined classes and learned about the on-site daycare that supports young mothers as young as 17 with 4 year olds. I’ve heard heartbreaking stories that have struck incredibly close to home, while also getting to encourage local small businesses and explore the vibrant streets of Arusha. It’s been a rollercoaster of feelings, but every moment has been humbling, eye-opening, and something I’ll carry with me always.

At Bedford we are really proud of Courtney! If any of our other past students would like to share their experiences since leaving Bedford- please get in touch with Mrs Duffy at School.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS): The 2026 water safety campaign launched on Thursday 21 May. This year, the water safety campaign’s key messages are:

202 people accidentally drowned in the UK in 2025. Don’t become a statistic. Stay safe around water.

Jumping into open water can be fatal. Cold water shock kills and you don’t know what’s lurking beneath the surface.

If you encourage your mates to go in the water it could be the last time you see them.

If you get into difficulty in the water, float to live.

Someone in trouble in the water? Remember Phone, Float, Throw - it could save their life. Phone 999 to get help (ask for fire if inland or the coastguard if by the sea). Tell them to stay calm and float on their back. Throw rescue equipment to help them float until emergency services arrive.
